Evolution of a Cake!

I thought all of you might like to see where a cake starts and how it ends up!
Step One:  Inspiration
For this particular cake, I was sent an invitation and asked to come up with something incorporating the luau theme.

Step Two:  Sketch
Next, I sketch up a few different designs and have the client choose what they would like.  This is the sketch that the client chose:

Step Three:  Flavors and Fillings
This particular cake is made up of a 10 inch tier of yellow cake with butter cream filling, an 8 inch tier of vanilla cake with Oreo butter cream filling, and a 6 inch tier of strawberry cake with butter cream filling.  All covered in marshmallow fondant with fondant and gumpaste decorations.

Step Four:  Preparation
This cake consists of several hibiscus flowers and a flower lei that will need to be made ahead of time,as they are hand-formed.  Here is a photo of those completed.

Step 5:  Decorating the Cake
The cakes were baked and filled and then covered in white marshmallow fondant.  The 10 inch tier got a "grass skirt".   The 8 inch and 6 inch tiers got palm leaves and were bordered in white flowers.  The 8 inch tier wears the gumpaste lei and then the gumpaste hibiscus were added to the top.
